Phase 1: The Conceptual Design Process |

The goal of this project was to provide an outdoor dining deck within an existing enclosed courtyard. The grade differential between the adjacent cafeteria finished floor elevation and the courtyard is approximately 7’-0”. To explore optional design themes, HLA prepared four conceptual design alternatives for client consideration. |
Phase 2: Design Development |

Having selected Sketch Plan ‘D’ as their preferred alternative, Sheppard Pratt decided that introducing a pond in the courtyard would present liability issues. Remaining attracted to the original figure-ground design of the deck and pond, we were asked to develop a new design theme for the outdoor courtyard that did not include a pond. Given this direction, HLA redefined Sketch Plan ‘D’ into a terraced sculpture garden by introducing thematic Cairns, fountains, and outdoor photo panels. |
Phase 3: Construction Documents |

Upon approval of the Design Development concept, HLA prepared detailed construction documents and specifications for contractor bids and new construction. |
